Inability to get adequate amount of sleep is referred to as insomnia, and people suffering from it do not feel
refreshed after waking up in the morning. During daytime, the brain is exposed to lots of information and receives
many inputs, and in the night, it records, rejects and sorts out the data. The amount of required sleep varies from
person to person and age, but to function properly, most people require minimum of eight hours of sleep each day.

human being.
One of the biggest effects of insomnia is on the personality of a person, and insomniac develops the
tendency to burst over something which is very petty. Change in the personality caused by insomnia depends on
the length of disrupted sleep. Insomnia can also lead to complications in personal relationships as no one
wants to be with a person with annoying behavior and attitude. It makes a person more emotional and
negative, reacting too much for petty matters leading to arguments and strained relationships.
There is lack of concentration, the person becomes very sluggish and along with the severity of insomnia, the
performance starts becoming worse. Throughout the day, brain is exposed to a lot of information, and during
sleep, brain processes, discards and stores the data. In addition to changes in the personality, insomniac
also suffers from several psychological problems. For a person suffering from insomnia, operating machinery
and driving can be very dangerous.
Workplace colleagues, friends and family members find it extremely difficult to cope with the person who has not
had a good night’s sleep. The way insomnia affects younger and older people is different. Insomnia can
severely affect the health of a person, and the person may feel very fatigued, tired, with reduced level of energy
and slowed reflexes. Lack of sleep also slows down the rate of metabolism, and in case of severe insomnia,
person may experience stomach burns, heart problem and hallucinations.
Studies indicate that lack of sleep can lower the temperature of the body making it difficult for vital functions
to sustain. Insomnia also causes high blood pressure and increased heart rate. Chronic
insomnia can affect person’s life quite severely, and people around such person tend to get irritated due to his or
her annoying habits and behavior. If you feel that there is certain medical condition responsible for
